Since I am allergic to Nickel, this product has been very useful. I discovered that my hair clips and barrettes contain high amounts of nickel. Some of my jewelry that I thought contained nickel and had stopped wearing however ended up not containing nickel.
No more rashes!!
I'm so excited that I finally got this! I'm EXTREMELY allergic to nickel, and can now finally go through all of my jewelry to see what I can and cannot wear. The test works quickly and easily. At least on everything that I've tested so far, the red is bright and easy to see. For the price I was hoping that the bottles of solution would be bigger, but I guess you really do only need one drop of each per test.<br /><br />No more rashes!!
Allertest Nickel Detection Kit
I recently was diagnosed with a nickel allergy and was advised to avoid contact with belt buckles, snaps or other direct contact with nickel. Not knowing whether my belts or clothing contained nickel was a problem so I was happy to find this kit. It's quite easy to use and comes in a prescription bottle which is rather clever. I take a cotton swab and add a drop from each bottle to the tip. I swirl the swab on the item to be tested and look for a pinkish color to appear, indicating nickel.<br />I gave it 4 stars because they could have added a few cotton swabs for convenience. Overall, I thought the price was decent and it works as advertised.
Works and makes buying jewelry less of a guessing game
I just recently found out I have a Nickel allergy. According to my dermatologist, both "real" and costume jewelry can have Nickel mixed into the metal (along with belt buckles and snaps on pants, etc), so he suggested I buy this to carry with me to test jewelry before I buy it. I just whip this little test kit out of my purse and swab the jewelry before I commit to buying it. The solutions fit into the provided prescription style bottle, along with a few Q-Tip cotton swabs (which you have to provide). All you do is put 2 drops of Solution A and 2 drops of Solution B on the tip of a swab and wipe it across the metal for several seconds. If the swab turns pink (it's not a bright pink, so be sure to look closely), it contains Nickel. This sure beats breaking out into itchy blisters!
Works with a little elbow grease, FAINT results
You really have to work at this to make sure you get a result, and you must be careful that you got equal amounts of each solution on the cotton swab. I accidentally got too much of Solution B, and got a negative result on something I knew had nickel. Also, you have to really rub hard for 15+ seconds, and then you see a FAINT, faint pink on the cotton swab. It's very subtle.<br /><br />It would have been helpful if the makers included something to use as a "positive control", something that contained nickel so you could see what a positive test looks like and know what you're looking for while testing unknown items. I highly suggest that users find their own positive control - find something you know has nickel, and test that to see the pink and know you're doing it right.<br /><br />Also, this seems to release ammonia gas when the solutions are mixed, so use in a well-ventilated area, and don't put your face right over the swab or item being tested or you'll get a whiff of ammonia in your nose/eyes.<br /><br />As it turns out, real surgical grade stainless steel does test NEGATIVE for nickel! (And I tried really, really hard to get a result on that one!) I was using this test kit to double-check my earring-making components to make sure there was no nickel content for making hypoallergenic earrings. Again, I HIGHLY recommend using a positive control (and perhaps a negative non-nickel control as well) to make sure your results are real and valid.
