bulbs are cheap

Sent it back because you can't get a non-broken lightbulb? That's pretty silly, the cost of shipping it back was probably more than the cost to go to the hardware store and buy a $.75 bulb. I agree that they did a poor job of shipping the replacement, but you will break or burn-out the bulbs eventually anyway... So suck it up and go buy a bulb.

And for the reviewer complaining about the focal distance... The magnification rate and focal legnth are tied together by the laws that govern the optical properties of a magnifying lense. Any simple single element lense of the same power will have the same focal distance. You need a binocular or telescope to magnify with this sort of power at a longer distance, that means more weight, and compound lenses. They do make such devices, microsurgeons have them, and people with really poor eyesight sometimes need them. Another option is to tell an eyedoctor what you want and get a perscription for some progressive lenses with a variable focal legnth... but magnification will drop off quickly as objects are farther out, after all this is another simple single element lense again.

This unit does what it is supposed to do, though the headlights are kinda crappy with regard to their aim... But you can get the bulbs to aim better if you adjust them a bit, or use different bulbs that have a wider dispersion pattern... or just turn them off and use a good worklight.
