take good care of the internal battery
I bought this trimmer two months ago. I use it to keep my hair very short. I have not gone to a barber ever since I bought this. I simply turn the dial to set the guard to level 5 and cut all of my hair the same lenght. Definitely easy to use. On my short hair, I can probably get four complete haircuts in one charge. This is a good trimmer for those men who like to keep their hair very short all the way around. Use it two times and it would have paid for itself due to the fact that you were able to avoid going to a barber.<br />This is my second Norelco trimmer. My first one was a T6000 that I bought back in February of 2001. The battery stopped taking a charge four months ago, after almost 3 years of use. I called Norelco to have the battery replaced, and I was then informed that they do not replace the batteries on these trimmers since replacing the battery would cost as much as buying a newer unit. So, I ordered the newer T860 from Amazon. The T860 functions just like the older T6000. In addition, the T860 can also function as a corded trimmer, in the event the battery stops taking a charge. The service life of the trimmer can extend beyond the life of the rechargeable battery by using the cord. I am satisfied with it.<br />By the way, the reason why the battery got damaged in my older T6000 was that I kept the unit plugged in the charger stand for very long periods of time. I later learned not to do that, as that practice will damage the battery over time. Overcharging even a little seems to damage the battery over time. It's best to read the directions so you will know how to properly care for the battery. The battery basically will determine the life of the unit. The cutters do not wear out, from what I can tell. The motor seems durable. So the life of the unit is really how long you can keep the internal rechargeable battery working. Norelco's internal rechargeable Ni-Cad batteries can last a long time, if given proper care. They seem to be of good quality.<br />I had a Norelco 885 razor, and the battery was still taking a charge after nine years. The razor had the advantage of having a five level battery meter that tells you how much charge is left in the internal batteries. Basically, you want to wait until there is only a little charge left before you put the unit in the charger. It seems this trimmer is a bit different though. The instructions on the T860 unit say to completely drain the battery. Which would be a bit inconvenient. With the T860 trimmer, it takes 10 hours for a full charge. Recharge fully. That way, you can minimize the dreaded "memory effect" or voltage depression and extend the useful life of the rechargeable batteries. The rechargeable batteries are permanently soldered inside the unit. This trimmer unit, T860, does not have a charge meter. I refrained from getting the pricier unit with a charge meter in order to economize. However, my advice to you, if you're not too cost-sensitive, is to get a unit with a charge meter. That way, you will know when to charge the unit and when to remove the unit from the charger. That precise practice should help extend the life of the battery, and hence, the unit.

Wow! I should have bought one of these long ago! It's totally worth every penny after you use it a few times. There is NO need to get the next model up if all you want is a good shave. The next model up (the T990 I believe) charges in 1 hour vs. 10 hours for this model, and it has an LCD screen to show battery life. For as often as you'll use this trimmer, plugging it in overnight while you're sleeping is not that big a deal. This model doesn't have an LCD screen to tell you battery life, but do you really wanna pay more than double just for a quicker charge and a display of battery life? Not me!<br />The guard on the trimmer is smooth and glides easily over your skin. The T860 trims effortlessly - never snagging, pulling, or getting clogged with your hair. Battery life stays consistent until the last minute before it's completely drained. To eliminate hair's static attration to the rubber dial used to change cutting length, spray it with a quick spritz of Static Guard. Otherwise, just rinse it off when you're done; the hair rinses off easily with water.<br />This trimmer is made to trim facial hair, but it works GREAT on the legs, chest, stomach, and any other areas you'd imagine shaving! The 9 different settings insure that you keep the hair on, but under control...nice and tidy appearence. We all know how hairy we guys can get! I like to use a #3 on my legs, but you'd want to start out with a 6, then go DOWN ONE LEVEL AT A TIME to ensure that you don't cut TOO MUCH OFF.<br />DO NOT USE THE GUARDLESS TRIMMER WITHOUT READING THE DIRECTIONS! I nipped my skin (drawing a little blood) several times. Read directions and see illustrations for proper use without the guard. In any case, I do not recommend using it guardless in sensitive areas as it can be painful.<br />Anyway, if you're wondering whether you should buy this trimmer, DO. You will NOT regret the INVESTMENT! It saves so much time!
Does the job.
Indeed, it does the job. Would have benefitted from being waterproof so could be rinsed after use, but otherwise does just fine + the price is right. No battery indicator - I just give it a swift re-charge about one a month. Beware of changing settings and forgetting to reselect the most appropriate for the target area.....!
Norelco delivers!!!!
The 860T is all that Norelco says it is. I was worried that the "Acu-Control system" would be fragile and gimmicky, but Norelco has proven me wrong! This trimmer delivers a precise, consistent shave every time. It is easy to use and the controls have a solid feel to them giving you complete control over your beard and moustache. I also like that Norelco gives you the option of corded or cordless shaving with the 860T. This is as good as it gets.
It does a great job, but ...
... there's a few things that Norelco needs to change. First, the zoom ring, because it's made of rubber, tends to attract hair like a magnet attracts metal. Cleaning hair off of there is a MAJOR pain!! It'd be a hell of a lot easier to clean if it was made of plastic. Secondly, the cleaning brush they include is too small, and its design ain't that ergonomic. And why does it take 10 hours to charge up? Of course, I guess the average person doesn't use a trimmer that often, so I'm thinking that won't be a big deal. Overall, though, this product works as advertised. If you just want to "get the job done", and could care less about all that fancy, high tech stuff, then you'll get your money's worth with this trimmer.
Great Bargain
I bought this to trim both my hair and my beard since I keep both the same, very short length. So far, so good. I've had it now for 1.5 years and it's enabled me to keep the exact look I want all the time. It's already saved me money from getting haircuts and since it only takes me me 15-25 minutes to do my head and beard I save a lot of time too. I like the multiple settings....the choices for length are very satisfactory. My only complaint is that Norelco claims the blades are self sharpening but I've noticed that the trimmer has gotten less efficient over time and that it now takes longer to trim my hair and beard. Having said that, my needs are fairly unique and this product meets those needs very well.
